2 days Later – Media Fast

After 2 days of no T.V., no Web surfing, no instant messaging the feeling I get is the feeling of relief. I feel free of many false obligations that I had obliged myself to. I feel great sense of clarity in my decisions about my daily actions, with the presence of T.V. and other media there was always the chance. Something goods on I’ll watch or in case of youtube it was always like oh let me just watch this one video while I am working. Now I feel it was nothing but lie to myself because I wanted to get away from the work I was doing. Now I am able to take action without sitting there and thinking about it for an hour procrastinating work while I look for a song or I find a video or read an totally irrelevant article or sign into my messenger just to see who is on.

Instead of reading random stuff on the internet, I read book on actual topic that interest, intrigue, make me think, take action, and cultivate growth at each step. I have done more reading in the past 2 days than ever, one of the reasons is because I am reading really good books but the other is because now I have a lot more time on my hands. I know knowledge isn’t everything but it is a good start it is that seed that the plant sprouts out of which later becomes a strong tree. I am still tempted at times to watch T.V. with my younger sister or play video games with my brother but the feeling of passing on something of greater beneficial compels me to do something better and the temptation of such useless activity perishes instantly.

One of the things that I have notice is that my mind escaping me while I am trying to read sometimes. It slips away ever so quietly into thinking irrelevant thoughts I have started to notice it and the only thing I have to do is gently remind it that there is no place more joyful than the present. If you ever catch your mind drifting away remind yourself that the past is what has left you and the future is only a figment of your imagination but the moment you have now you can change to your liking. If you are doing something you absolutely hate doing you can change that before it becomes your past.

Media Fast 30 days

What new habit am I committing to maintain for the next 30 days?

I am committing to a total media fast for the next 30 days starting today October 23rd 2008 Which will last until November 23rd 2008. The reason for this is to detox the layer of obscurity that is effecting my daily routines, diluting my true values and pilfering my time seamlessly.

This includes:

  • No Youtube (absolutely none)
  • No T.V. (live, or recorded)
  • No blog reading (will only post my journals)
  • No MSN or any other form of Chatting
  • No Magazines or Newspaper reading or any kind.
  • No Internet surfing except school/work/research related.

What will this do for me if I succeed?

I have done this for a day before for my Media Psychology class which worked out pretty well. The day seem to stretch a lot longer, there is time to do many things, sense of clarity is increased and there is an increase in awareness. I usually end up reading much more about a lot of different topics which tributes to high levels of motivation and more outcome in terms of productivity. All this is far more important to me than just entertaining myself or entertaining someone else, I don’t feel that I am missing out on a lot so this should not be too difficult but rather be rewarding every step along.

How will I reward myself after 30 days of success?

The sense of achievement and increase of gratitude shall suffice, materialistically speaking I will probably purchase a few books to reward myself.

Presence of thy concious

As human beings, we’re often filled with conflicting desires. One part of us wants to be healthy, happy and highly consciousness. Another part wants nothing more than to eat, sleep, have sex, and be lazy.

Without the presence of consciousness, we fall into reflexive patterns by default, living more like unconscious animals than fully sentient human beings.”
